Outreach Experience with Hawai'i Health & Harm Reduction Center
Recently, members of our research group had the incredible opportunity to shadow Dr. Wang and her team from the Hawai'i Health & Harm Reduction Center (HHRC) as they provided wound care in the community. This experience gave us valuable insight into the challenges faced by unhoused individuals and those disproportionately affected by social determinants of health. HHRC’s mission—reducing harm, promoting health, creating wellness, and fighting stigma—resonates deeply with our work in chronic wound healing. Their dedicated team provides critical healthcare services to some of Hawai'i’s most vulnerable populations, including individuals affected by HIV, hepatitis, substance use, and homelessness. Witnessing compassionate, community-centered care in action reinforced the importance of translating scientific research into real-world impact. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from HHRC’s team and look forward to future collaborations to improve healthcare accessibility and outcomes in Hawai’i and the Pacific.
